Is orthognathic surgery covered by insurance?
Many medical insurance plans cover orthognathic surgery when it’s medically necessary to correct functional problems. We’ll work with you to understand your coverage and help with pre-authorization. The orthodontic portion may be covered by dental insurance.
What is recovery like?
Most patients experience swelling and some discomfort for the first week. You’ll follow a liquid/soft food diet initially, gradually returning to normal foods over 6-8 weeks. Most people return to work or school within 2-3 weeks. Full healing takes about 12 weeks, though you’ll feel much better before then.
Will my jaw be wired shut?
Modern techniques typically don’t require jaw wiring. Small plates and screws hold the jaw in position while it heals. You may have elastic bands to help guide your bite, but you’ll be able to open your mouth.
At what age can you have jaw surgery?
Surgery is typically performed after jaw growth is complete—around age 16-17 for females and 18-21 for males. However, each case is unique and timing depends on individual growth patterns and specific needs.
Will I look different after surgery?
Your facial appearance will improve as jaw alignment is corrected, creating better balance and harmony. You’ll still look like yourself, just with improved proportions and profile. We use 3D planning to show you predicted results before treatment begins.
