What Happens During the Different Stages of Braces Treatment?

Getting braces is a process that takes place over time. Knowing what to expect can make the experience feel much less intimidating for both patients and parents. At Belmont Orthodontics, Dr. Melita guides patients through every stage, from the first consultation to the final retainer.

Stage 1: Your Initial Consultation

Everything starts with an evaluation. Dr. Melita will examine your teeth, bite, and jaw alignment and may take photographs or digital dental images. This information helps us understand what needs to be corrected and develop a treatment plan that fits your smile.

Stage 2: Getting Ready for Braces

Some patients need a little preparation before braces are placed. Depending on the individual situation, this could include spacers or completing necessary dental work. Not everyone needs this step, and your orthodontic team will explain exactly what is recommended for you.

Stage 3: Braces Placement

During the braces appointment, brackets are carefully attached to the teeth with dental adhesive. An archwire is then placed through the brackets. The appointment itself generally isn’t painful, although it’s normal to experience some pressure or mild soreness afterward.

Stage 4: Teeth Begin Moving

This is the part of treatment where you’ll gradually start seeing your smile change. During regular appointments, Dr. Melita may adjust wires or use additional components such as elastics or springs to guide your teeth. Appointments are often scheduled every several weeks, depending on your treatment plan.

Stage 5: Fine-Tuning Your Smile and Bite

As your teeth approach their ideal positions, treatment shifts toward smaller adjustments and bite refinement. The goal isn’t simply to make your teeth look straight. Your upper and lower teeth also need to come together properly for a functional, stable result.

Stage 6: Removing the Braces

Once your teeth and bite have reached their planned positions, it’s time to remove the braces. The brackets are carefully taken off, remaining adhesive is removed, and you’ll finally get to see your new smile without braces.

Stage 7: Retention

There’s one very important step after braces: wearing your retainer. Teeth naturally tend to move over time, so retainers help maintain the alignment you’ve worked hard to achieve. Following your retainer instructions is one of the best ways to protect your results.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

Every patient is different. Treatment time depends on factors such as age, bite, tooth movement, and the complexity of the case. Many orthodontic treatments take roughly 12 to 30 months, but Dr. Melita will provide an individualized estimate based on your smile.
