Loose or Broken Bracket

Brackets can occasionally loosen after eating hard or sticky foods or simply from everyday wear during treatment. If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it where it is and place orthodontic wax over it to keep it from rubbing against your cheeks or lips. If the bracket comes off completely, keep it in a safe place and bring it with you to your appointment. Contact our office so we can arrange a repair if needed.

Wire Causing Irritation

It’s not unusual for a wire to feel sharp, especially after an adjustment. If a wire is poking the inside of your mouth, you can often make yourself more comfortable by:

  • Gently pushing the wire back into place with the eraser end of a pencil or a clean cotton swab.
  • Covering the area with orthodontic wax to protect your cheeks or gums.
  • Carefully trimming a small section of a broken wire with sanitized nail clippers if it’s causing significant irritation.
  • Calling our office so we can schedule a repair as soon as possible.

Loose Orthodontic Band

The metal bands placed around your back teeth can occasionally become loose. If one slips off easily, remove it, keep it in a safe place, and bring it to your next visit. Until it has been replaced, avoid chewy, crunchy, or sticky foods that could make the problem worse.

Tender Teeth After an Adjustment

Mild soreness for a few days after having your braces adjusted is completely normal. Your teeth are moving into healthier positions, and a little tenderness is expected. Eating softer foods, rinsing with warm salt water, and taking an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed can help ease discomfort. While it may be uncomfortable, this type of soreness is usually not considered an emergency.

Lost or Damaged Invisalign Aligners

If your Invisalign aligner is lost or cracked, wear your previous aligner if you still have it and contact our office right away. Depending on your treatment progress, Dr. Melita will let you know whether you should move to your next aligner or wait for a replacement.

When to Contact Us Right Away

Some situations require immediate attention. If you experience severe pain, significant swelling, an injury to your teeth or mouth, or a wire that cannot be managed with orthodontic wax, contact Belmont Orthodontics as soon as possible. Dr. Melita and our team will make every effort to see you quickly and get your treatment back on track.
